常见的大钟有三种类别，唐朝时期的“平直形”钟口铜钟，唐宋时期的“浅波形”钟口铜钟，以及明清时期的“喇叭形”钟口铜钟。明清时期大钟的钟壁在钟口处都有外扩，呈现出所谓的“喇叭形”；铜钟的壁厚，由唐钟的均匀分布，演变为从上往下逐渐增厚，避免了早期大钟重击易裂的缺点。

钟有 特钟和 编钟之别，特别人的钟叫特钟，能单独的悬在架上。成组依大小次序悬在一个架上的是编钟，大小和它的高低音有关系，有的十六个为一组。现存的钟有 西周初期以至 春秋战国时期的，战国较盛行。钟用木槌敲击演奏，考古发现的编钟，有槌同时出土。

钟的形制有两种，一种是带高的筒形纽，钟的下口两边突出如月牙形；另一种上端的纽是扁的，有的纽作伏兽形，钟下口是平的。
